2014 Easterns Championship at Seaside Park YC: It’s “Showtime” on Cedar Creek
Read Article
40 E-Scows made their way to the New Jersey beach town of Seaside Park for the 2014 Eastern Class E-Scow Association (ECESA) Championship, hosted by Seaside Park Yacht Club from July 31st through Aug. 2nd. This Easterns promised to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, with a collection of graying former champions including Dick Wight, Erik Johnson, Russ Lucas, Dave Magno and Rick Turner squaring off against young contenders such as Jeff Bonanni, Chad Hillyer and John Brown (well, the crew is sort of young). To spice up the mix, the incoming fleet also boasted long-distance travelers like Augie Barkow from Pewaukee and Robby Wilkins from Charleston and Melges 20 hotshots Michael Kiss and Travis Weisleder. Even former E national champion and world-famous photographer Peter Hurley was scheduled to make a cameo appearance.

Sam Rogers with Chrisy Hughes, Tony Jewett and Lynn Jewett as crew win the 2014 E-Scow National Championship Regatta held at the Crystal Lake Yacht Club in Frankfort MI. As you can see from the scores it was a close fought battle and they won by 1 point over 13 year old Harry Melges IV and his crew of father Harry Melges III, Andy Burdick, and two young hikers May Burdick, and Monroe Melges.
The volunteers at Crystal Lake Yacht Club provided an experience to be remembered. They left no stone unturned to provide the best venue possible, and then delivered always with a smile.
Congratulations to Sam and his team and a big thank you to the entire Crystal Lake Yacht Club.

Congratulations to first time E skipper Matt Pistay - his chart looks impressive.
Also Clay Johnson, Jeff Bonanni, PHIL Morley, and John McGlynn - their charts are headed in the right direction too.

I hope your chart isn't a downer - but if it is, you have to agree the sailing was great.

It is always fun to report on someones first big success, and we all like to see this; Ben Burgum M-20, new to the E-Scow fleet, lead the last race of the day for most of the way. Although he ended up third it must have been a thrill. He was being chased by seven Geneva sail numbers around the top mark, just a little intimidating while on their home lake. Young I-2, Scott Ripkey I-10, Vincent I-2, Peter Strothman I-9, Steve Lyon I-88, Brian Porter I-49, and Mike Gannon I-22 followed Ben at the first mark.

Thirteen teams attended the Wanamaker Regatta on June 14, 2014. The fleet sailed three races in a puffy 10-12 knot north-westerly on the Seaside course. PRO Chip Hillyer and crew (thanks again Chip for running all these preseason events!) set windward-leeward courses with an average race time of 45 minutes. It was a great feeling to stretch the legs after most of the preseason short course sailing on the more protected waters of the Toms River.

19 scows graced the course on Saturday for the 10th running of the Runnie Colie Regatta. This regatta is so special for all of us on the Bay because we sail to honor and smile with our friend Runnie Colie Jr.

While the BBYRA is celebrating our 100th anniversary this summer, we revel in the fact that Runnie, 98 last week, has been a part of 98% of this long history. Who in their sound mind could imagine doing something special in any part of their life and project that it would be so vitally relevant and important to yet ANOTHER generation of cool kids 2-3-20-40-60-80-100 years from now.

Well, I think we Scow sailors are that lucky….. or have unsound minds… or both.

A beautifull day of racing in Lake Geneva with 35 E-Scows on the line. Winds down the lake from the west at 5-15 with major shifts. Three 4 leg races – the downwind finish got the fleet off on the second race 5 minutes after the last boat finished – with a slightly longer 15 minute delay between the second and third race to scarf down on board lunches.

Leading it Chris Jewett (M-3) followed by Jeff Bonanni (T-73) and Lon Schoor (H-7). The shifty puff conditions made it hard to have consistently good races as boat might easily change positions by as much as 12 boats between marks.
