The
Runyon Colie-Bilgeboarder E Scow One Day Regatta was held Saturday May
31st at Mantoloking (NJ) Yacht Club. We had a 17 boat fleet sail in
light to moderate conditions, with just enough holes to swallow most
boats in at least one of the races, and just enough puffs to show the
dazzling gains to be made with the new asymm rig. Regatta winner was
the host club's Peter Hurley (MA-11), who sailed by far the most
consistent regatta (4-4-3). Peter's crew were Elise Paul, Amanda Wright
and Garret VanDuyne, dispelling one of the myths against the asymm by
winning with two women aboard.
The regatta also included surprise mystery guest Peter Commette, who
returned to his home waters of Barnegat Bay to take a regatta 3rd, with
a bullet in the last race. We just might have convinced Peter to move
back to New Jersey!
We were also graced by the presence of Runnie and Betsy Colie, and Dr.
Britton Chance at the post-race awards. Runnie spent the day on the RC
boat, keeping a watchful eye over all of us. Brit of course is one of
the four founding members of the Bilgeboarders from 1935, and the 1952
Olympic Gold medalist in the 5.5 meter class. We were so honored to
have Runnie, Betsy and Brit join us.
