Greetings!
This is the second issue of NCESA Digital Reaches
Newsletter. We got some nice comments on the last
issue and hope to keep you up to date with this regular
monthly online publication. Past issues will be easy to
find on E-Scow.org in case you miss on. We
intentionally only signed up 2004 Regular Members to
see how it would go over and to keep unwanted emails
out of your in box. Please pass the word among your
local fleet and invite everyone to sign up.
Congratulations to the Spring Regatta winners so far
this season. At Sarasota in March, Dave Decker and
crew of X-888 won. At Charleston Will Demand, T-1
won with 23 boats participating at this great southern
venue.
If you have a story idea or fleet report drop us note
and we would be glad to publish it.
Thanks Pete Price

WX for Sailors: Thermals |
 |
A new informal series of articles on Weather for
Sailors is being added to the E-Scow website.
There is more information available now online then
ever before. Introductory Weather Seminars, Online
Classes, Educational hands on Java applets and links to
real-time resources. It only makes sense to make it
available.
"The Thermal" is a brief introduction into puffs and
lulls and how they form. If you have any specific topics
that you would like covered drop a note to
NcesaNews@E-Scow.org
One last thing every Yacht Club should have is an
introductory Meteorology Book. Just go online to
Amazon.com or another online used bookstore and
pick up a Introductory Meteorology and Oceanography
Textbook and keep it in their Youth Sailing Library.
These books are a great resource to have around.

Lavallette YC - 100 years old |
 |
Lavallette Yacht Club on Barnegat Bay is celebrating
it's 100
anniversary this year by hosting the ECESA Eastern E-
Scow Championship on August 4th - 7th.
Originally the Yacht Club was located on the ocean
until a winter storm damaged the beachfront
Clubhouse late in 1914 there were few objections to
the proposal that it be moved to the bay front. By July
of 1915 it was in place, the annex was moved to the
rear, a second-floor front porch was added, and the
first-floor porch was carried down the full length of the
south side of the Clubhouse and Annex. Joe Stillwell
did the job for $1922; he inadvertently set the building
down in the charted path of the Bay Boulevard , but
the Boulevard existed almost entirely on paper and the
miscalculation went unnoticed, or at least unheeded, at
the time.
Lavallette was one of the six first-year members when
the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association was formed
in 1914. During the 1920's and early 1930's, when 50
to 60 fifteen-foot sneakboxes from eight clubs raced in
the BBYRA's weekly regattas, Lavallette's fleet ranked
with the best, and several skippers brought home Bay
Championships. As the BBYRA fleet grew more
diversified, so did Lavallette's. Over the years the Club
has had champions or strong contenders in virtually
every class-among them Moths, Snipes, Penguins,
Comets, Jets, G-Boats, M-Sloops, Lightnings, Class E-
Sloops, Flying Dutchmen, Lasers, and catboats of all
sizes. Three of the original five historic Class A
Catboats have represented Lavallette at one time or
another, and all brought championships to the
club. Dave and Paul Magno along with Buzz and
Phil Reynolds have been members at Lavallette for
many years helping to build a fantastic youth program.
Housing information for Easterns is already posted on
the Lavallette Website here

Pre-Season Preparations |
 |
It is time to get started with warm season sports
training program. The sailing season has started for
some and will be soon activity up North.
Here are 6 things you can do to get ready for the
sailing season:
- Check over your mast to see if you have any
frayed stay wires or worn running backs. Main
halyards seem to often fray at the top.
- Check your lines and sheets to see if you can pick
up a new jib sheet or board line before the season
starts.
- Take a look at your boards and file out any nicks
or gouges.
- Pull the boat out of storage and give it a good
power wash and put a good coat of Starbrite teflon
polish on the hull (buff it in if you can)
- Check the bearings on your trailer and your lights
to see if they are all ready to go and have fresh
grease.
- Invite the crew over for a barbeque to talk about
summer plans. Find out what they think you should
improve on as a skipper.
Another thing would be to plan out your regatta
schedule and think if you can find another boat on your
lake to travel with. It is always more fun to travel as
pairs of boats.

T-1 wins Charleston Easter E |
 |
Will Demand and crew of T-1 won the Charleston
Easter E-Scow Regatta on April 9-10. Crayton Walters
chief organizer and coach boat driver put together a
nearly perfect event with all the right ingredients,
(wind, sun, great rc, awesome social events)
Buddy Melges and his wife Gloria attended the event
as spectators, distinguished lecturer and coach. It was
an honor that many of the sailors did not expect and
was a rare treat. In his speech to the fleet he implored
them the sailors to "keep the deck dry!". The lee deck
is not designed to be submerged.
Achille Scache sent in a nice note after the event, he
writes " The next day, we got up at 7:30 to go down to
the buffet lunch at our hotel and eat up for the day of
racing. Medium air greeted us at the club, and I
learned what it was like to hike like mad on an E-
Boat. Let me tell you, nothing like a Lightning. At the
end of the first race, going downwind, back towards
the start, we jibed, I got clocked in the nose (and bled
onto those beautiful white sails) and we capsized.
Nothing like capsizing you're first time out, and being
rescued by an America's Cup Champion. That's an
experience I'll never forget. Anyway, we recovered,
sailed the boat out, and finished all of our race. Your
class knows how to have fun, sail by the seat of their
pants, and welcome newcomers amazingly. People are
willing to listen to you, and no one, from the sail
makers, to the boat builders, to Buddy Melges himself,
is too good to help you with tuning, or sail shape or
anything else."
