Jonas Saunders 1970-2010

Jonas Campbell Saunders, age 39, of Spring Lake passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 30, 2010, at a Grand Rapids hospital.

He was born September 18, 1970, in Detroit to Dannie and Jean (Campbell) Saunders; and he married the former Michelle "Shelly" Siewert on July 19, 1997, in Red Wing, Minnesota.

A 1989 graduate of Spring Lake High School, Jonas was also salutatorian of his class and earned All-State titles in soccer and All-Seaway Conference title in baseball. Jonas went on to earn an English degree from the University of Michigan in 1993 and a law degree from the University of Detroit in 1996. He specialized in corporate law at his firm in Grand Haven, Saunders Winter McNeil. Jonas was a board member and served on the executive committee at the Spring Lake Country Club, was president of the Spring Lake Schools Foundation and the Spring Lake Junior Sailing Association, was a member of the Bar Association, and enjoyed coaching soccer for the Tri-Cities Strikers and the Tri-Cities Youth Soccer Organization. He also enjoyed golfing and working with the Spring Lake Junior Golf Association, boating, sailing, skiing and platform tennis.

He will be forever loved and missed by his wife, Shelly; his four children: Lilly, Phoebe, Porter and Clara; his parents, Dannie and Jean Saunders of St. Clair; his mother- and father-in-law, Neal and Barbara Siewert of Red Wing, Minn.; his grandmother, Gladys Campbell of St. Clair; a sister, Hannah Saunders (Mick) Hannan of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Jayne (Ron) Sahli of Alexandria, Minn., and Kathy (Brad) Brozik of Eagle Lake, Minn.; and two brothers-in-law, Todd (Joni) Siewert of Hastings, Minn., and Paul (Shelly) Siewert of Red Wing, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Vern Campbell; and his aunt, Linda Campbell.

The service for Jonas will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Christ Community Church in Spring Lake with the Rev. Peter Theune officiating. Friends may meet the family 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake.
