Chase Hillyer
Chase, a member of Island Height
Yacht Club, has been crewing on E-Scows for the past
five years for both class veterans like Cliff Campbell
and Fred Slack and young hotshots like Carl Horrocks and
has raced in multiple Eastern and National
championships.
Chase competed in FJs, 420s, Lasers
and Sloops for Washington College, earning a varsity letter all
four years. He was a member of the third-place team at
the ISSA Keelboat Nationals in 2006, recorded several
top finishes at intersectional regattas as a B division
skipper, and served as captain of the Washington College

Chase’s E-Scow team for the 2009
season includes bowman Derek Packard, a former
Washington College teammate and longtime scow sailor
from Minnetonka; and two high-powered women in the
middle: Meredith Dodd, another former Washington College
teammate and a two-time winner of the Adams Trophy
championship as tactician; and Leigh Kempton, a former
Optimist National Champion and youth worlds team member
who was a skipper on Boston College’s women’s national
champion dinghy team in 2008 and received Honorable
Mention All-American recognition.
Eric Horrocks
Eric, a member of Lavallette Yacht
Club, began his E-Scow career a decade ago crewing for
top skipper Paul Magno and has gone on sail to sail with
a mix of veterans and newcomers including Tim Faranetta,
Peter Hurley and Chad Hillyer. He has competed in
several Eastern and National Championships, as well as
the 2007 Blue Chip, where he crewed for his older
brother Carl.
Eric is currently a student and
member of the intercollegiate dinghy team at the United
States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. He has
been a successful skipper in a variety of classes
including Laser, M-Scows, 420s and FJs. In the Laser, he
placed third in the 2004 high school nationals, 12th
in the 2004 U.S. Youth Champs and 19th in the
2005 U.S. Nationals. In recent years, he has branched
out to sailing the doublehanded M-Scow, recording a
sixth-place finish in the 2007 Nationals and taking 4th
in the 2008 BBYRA series.
Eric will be campaigning this
summer with an experienced crew of bowman Jason Comer
and middle crew Katie Wight and Colleen Kelly. They plan
to conduct an extensive practice and regatta schedule
beginning in late May.---Glen
