The current scanting rule indicates the bowsprit shall have a minimum diameter of 2.25 inches. Currently the Melges Performance Sailboats bowsprit is 2.25 inches in diameter and the bowsprit from Windward Boats is 2.4 inches.  Both meet the minimum OD requirement. It has been noted there is no maximum diameter for the bowsprit. The Rules Committee is considering  adding a maximum outside dimension of 2.5 inches. This would be a scantling change to be presented to the Board of Directors at their Fall meeting, with subsequent submission to the membership for a vote.  This would require a 2/3 majority membership vote for approval. Anyone installing a bowsprit should consider the Rules Committee intentions if they are using anything but "standard parts" from the two suppliers.
